If you love the convenience of hidden valley ranch packets, but not all the ingredients, I’ve got a fabulous healthy copycat dry ranch recipe mix for you. You can use this homemade ranch seasoning mix to make salad dressing or homemade ranch dip, just like you would with the hidden valley packet.
All the great taste and convenience is there, but the big difference between the homemade version and the store-bought packet is the ingredient list. The great thing about making your own homemade ranch dressing mix is that you can exclude all the unhealthy stuff and use simple, wholesome ingredients instead.
AND…this easy recipe uses pantry ingredients, takes just 5 minutes to make, and will stay good in an airtight container at room temperature for 6 months.
Why you’ll love it
- DIY homemade seasoning mixes (like no salt taco seasoning and vegan dry soup mix) let you control the ingredients to meet your dietary needs.
- Convenience: This dry seasoning mix is just as convenient to use as those little packets of ranch.
- Shelf life: This ranch mix is a pantry staple in our house because it will last 6 months.
- Versatile: Lots of recipes call for a packet of ranch seasoning and you can use 2 Tablespoons of this instead!
- Low Sodium Ranch Dressing Recipe: Just 75 mg sodium in a serving, and you can skip the ½ teaspoon salt if you’re on a low sodium diet.
- Vegan and Gluten-free for those that need it. Dairy-free ranch tastes delicious…you really don’t need the buttermilk.
- Perfectly seasoned and easy to turn into vegan ranch dressing or dip.
Ingredients and Substitutions
Have you read the nutritional information or the ingredient list in a packet of hidden valley ranch mix? I know, it’s horrifying to think about ingesting all of that. You’ll love the ingredients to this Dry Ranch Dressing Mix and I bet you can make this healthy version without even taking a trip to the grocery store!
- Nutritional yeast: This is the main ingredient of this dairy-free ranch recipe. Trust me, you don’t need dry buttermilk powder, and after you read the ingredients, you won’t want to use it anyway.
- Dried herbs: parsley, dill, basil and celery seed give this a fresh flavor. Substitute with oregano, thyme or chives.
- Garlic powder and onion powder: Make sure you’re adding the granulated form, not the salt.
- Onion flakes: these are dehydrated, minced onions.
- Mustard powder: sub with turmeric powder.
How to make your own ranch seasoning
This is literally the easiest recipe to make. Add nutritional yeast, parsley, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, onion flakes, basil, celery seed, dry mustard powder, salt and pepper to a dry mason jar. Shake well and store in an airtight container in your pantry for up to 6 months.
I love using these spice jars with labels for my custom blends, but you can use a simple mason jar or even a recycled salsa or jelly jar.

What is the sodium content per serving size?
Debra Klein
The sodium content is listed below the recipe based on an internal calculator that used 16 servings for the whole recipe….so, just under 2 Tablespoons for a serving. Keep in mind whatever you use to mix with the dry mix will also contribute to the overall sodium content. You could easily omit the added salt in this recipe and also make your own vegan sour cream without salt if you’re trying to cut back on sodium.
Phyllis
I love this recipe but cannot eat soy. Do you have alternative dressing recipes for this mixture? Thanks
Debra Klein
You can use vegan sour cream and a splash of lemon juice. You can also try my healthy ranch dressing recipe.

I see that it makes 16 servings but can’t tell what one serving actually is for nutritional information. Can you help? I’m trying to find a seasoning that fits into my grandpa’s sodium budget.
Debra Klein
1 serving is about 1 Tablespoon of the dry mix. Since you’re making this yourself, you can always decrease, or even omit the salt in the recipe to have a truly low sodium ranch seasoning.

Can the nutritional yeast be optional?
Debra Klein
That’s an interesting question.I think you would still get some flavor from all the other spices, but the nutritional yeast is what replaces the dry buttermilk powder in most other recipes and those packets…so I think the result would be a less authentic ranch vibe and an overall less rich flavor. I haven’t tried it that way, so I don’t know. You could try, and see what your taste buds say, but it really wouldn’t be the same recipe without that main ingredient.
