A No Salt Taco Seasoning Recipe is just what you need for all the great tasting Mexican recipes. It’s hard to find tasty low sodium taco seasoning mixes but so easy to make your own homemade spice blend.

It’s no secret I adore Mexican food and having a spice jar filled with this easy taco mix makes a great addition to my spice cabinet. I can easily add a few tablespoons of low sodium taco seasoning seasoning to vegan taco meat, sheet pan veggie fajitas, vegan tortilla soup, black bean veggie burgers or my favorite vegan taco recipe.
DIY taco seasoning lets you control the ingredients..and the end result is great flavor with less sodium. Plus it’s easy to make a big batch and so much less expensive than buying packets of taco seasoning.

Ingredients and Substitutions

- Chili powder: Regular chili powder adds tons of flavor without much heat. Use a bit of chipotle chili powder or ancho chili powder mixed in with the regular for a spicy taco seasoning. Look for sodium free chili powder to make this recipe completely sodium free.
- Cumin: Regular or toasted ground cumin will add a rich, earthy warm flavor to this spice blend.
- Paprika: I used regular paprika, but smoky paprika would also work well. Be careful with spicy paprika though. For extra heat add just a pinch of spicy paprika to this mexican spice blend.
- Oregano: If you can find mexican oregano it offers a bit of a citrusy flavor, but it’s stronger so use just half the amount called for in the recipe card.
- Onion powder: Onion powder, or onion flakes, not onion salt.
- Garlic powder: Garlic granules or garlic powder, but not garlic salt.
- Spicy alternatives to black pepper: If you’re looking for more heat, also add a dash of cayenne pepper, adobo seasoning, chipotle chili powder, red pepper flakes or spicy paprika. Otherwise stick to black pepper or white pepper to add some flavor without creating a spicy taco seasoning mix.

How to use taco seasoning

- Make Vegan Taco Meat: Add 2 tablespoons taco seasoning to this vegan ground beef recipe or to 1 pound of ground meat, and use in all your favorite Mexican recipes.
- Add 1 Tablespoon to each ½ cup vegan sour cream for a delicious taco dip or spread. It’s fabulous drizzled onto vegan lentil tacos!
- For tasty fajita style roasted veggies: Drizzle your favorite chopped veggies with olive oil, sprinkle with no salt seasoning, mix well and roast on 425 for 15-25 minutes, depending on size and type of vegetables.
- Sprinkle some into the pot when cooking dried beans.
- Add 1-2 Tablespoons into your black bean burger mixture before making patties.

I had all the ingredients in the cupboard and never thought of making my own taco seasoning, thank you. This is such a good use of my spices as sometimes I don’t use them all up before the end date. Drive me bonkers just how much salt is in everything so I appreciate this no-salt seasoning version. Thanks!

I made this homemade taco seasoning recipe and followed it to a T. It was very good and tasted like taco seasoning, of course minus the salt, however it did taste bitter when I tasted it by itself and when I put it in my taco meat I could still taste the bitterness. I’m not sure what else I could add or why it’s making it taste bitter. I felt like it needed something, but I wasn’t sure what it was. So I added a little bitty bit of cinnamon. That actually helped. and it didn’t make it taste like cinnamon. Do you have any tips? Or why it was bitter? Thank you for this recipe.
Debra Klein
Hmmmm…I love the idea of a pinch of cinnamon! The only spice in there that tastes bitter to some people is the cumin. Try tasting that on its own and see if you’re one of those people.

I just made your recipe and will see next time what it tastes like. We just had them with the packaged poison (salt). I’m tired of salt in my diet. Packaged taco seasoning has over 2,000 MG of salt!!! There are 6 servings to a package and 370 MG of salt per serving. 😫 not good for us older folks. Never thought I’d say that but it’s true. How can they get away with the salt content? Shouldn’t there be a regulation of salt in our products?? It’s in everything!! 😢
Debra Klein
I’m so glad you found my recipe…tastes great without all that sodium!
Annie Mason
So do you add any water? I don’t see anything about that so I will add my spice mix and see! I’m so happy to have one that is salt free. When I use the store bought packages, my eyes get all swollen from the huge amount of sodium!
Debra Klein
I’ll guess from your comment that you used this with ground meat. So, please let us know if you added water and how much while cooking it. I use this mostly with lentils, beans and veggies and I know other readers would like to hear about using this no salt seasoning with meat.
Patty
I’m assuming you’re making taco meat and if so just treat it like the packets of seasoning and add the 3/4 cup of water to it that a normal taco recipe calls for. Have a great day
Debra Klein
Yes, you can easily substitute this no salt taco seasoning for one of those packets when making taco meat. We also use this to season rice, beans, roasted veggies, vegan ground beef, and fajita veggies.
Susan Colford
How much taco seasoning do you use for 2 lbs of ground meat?
Debra Klein
I don’t eat meat….so I don’t have any experience with using this taco seasoning with ground meat. BUT…I can tell you that I use about 1 Tablespoon for every one cup of beans or lentils. You can probably guesstimate and use about 2 Tablespoons for every pound of meat.
K
Hello, could you omit the chilli powder in this? I want to make a salt free spice blend to use for black bean quesadillas for my 17 month old.
Debra Klein
As long as you’re using regular chili powder, it’s not usually very spicy. Chipotle chili powder has the same flavors but is super spicy, so for sure don’t use that. Although you could omit the chili powder, it is one of the main ingredients and brings so much flavor to this taco seasoning. So, if your concern is to keep things on the mild side for your child, you should be OK with regular chili powder. If you need to omit it for other reasons, use additional paprika and cumin.
Carolyn
Excellent taco seasoning that is full of flavor.
Debra Klein
I appreciate that Carolyn, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Christian Albouras
I was missing the onion power and still tasted good. Thanks for the recipe.
Debra Klein
So glad you tried it anyway….and thanks for letting us know!
Chelsea
This recipe is titled NO SALT, but chili powder has salt in it….very misleading.
Debra Klein
What kind of chili powder do you use? I have three different brands here and none of them have salt in them.
Jack
This salt-free taco seasoning is perfect! All of the store brands give me a headache and my wife needs to reduce sodium as much as possible for blood pressure. I used this tonight when making a salsa chicken recipe and it was so good.
Debra Klein
Yay! I love hearing this.
Kyle L Stith
How many Tablespoons of this taco seasoning are needed per 1 Lb. of ground beef or shredded chicken? Please advise, thanks
Debra Klein
I haven’t made this with beef or chicken…I mostly use it with beans or lentils. So, I’m guessing here, but I think 2 Tablespoons per pound of meat or chicken would be about right. 3 Tablespoons of this no salt taco seasoning is the equivalent of 1 packet of seasoning….so you could also look on the packet and follow those directions, using this no salt version instead.
Patty
Very pleased with this recipe. Definitely my new go-to taco seasoning!!!
Debra Klein
Thank you Patty! It’s definitely a keeper.
Diane
Super taste! If you are looking for completely sodium free, use sodium free chili powder!
Debra Klein
Great point….my chili powder is sodium free, I hadn’t realized not all brands are. I have updated the recipe card and ingredient list to reflect that note.
CYDNEY
Do you mix with water? If so how much?
Debra Klein
Depends on what you’re trying to make. You can sprinkled the seasoning directly onto your protein or veggies to cook. For a saucier result, for each pound of ground protein you can add 2 tablespoons low sodium taco seasoning plus 1/2 cup water, once the protein has browned. Stir well. Continue to cook over low heat until all the liquid has been absorbed.
