Raw Salted Brownie Bites
Raw Salted Brownie Bites. Perfect any time of day.

I’m in Mexico, soaking up some vitamin sea with a side of natural Vitamin D. I’m on year 18 traveling to warmer climes in the midst of winter with the same 8 women who have been my lifeline through years of raising kids, caring for aging parents, celebrating milestones and everything in between.  We were talking at lunch today about how important a touch of salt is to go along with a chocolate treat. Do you agree?

Salted Chocolate Raw Brownie Bites
Wholesome ingredients for a healthy treat.

Do you need a pinch of salt with your chocolate?

I’m really not much of a sweet person…but if I was to indulge, it would definitely be something chocolatey and there better be some salt to go along with it. That’s how I roll.  These trail mix bars have been a staple in our house for a long time for that reason, and also because they are hubby’s favorite.  I always have some in the freezer because CHOCOLATE and salt….together!!

Raw Salted Brownie Bites
Mix. Roll. Coat. Enjoy!

Looking for healthy snacks?

If I’m looking for a snack, I’m often interested in something healthy that’s tasty too. Though, sometimes I’m just looking for something tasty…and it would be nice if it was healthy too.  Are you following me? There is a subtle, but important difference between the two. I decided recently that I should create something that was equally tasty and good for you…as in, not just “not bad” for you, but actually good for you. Still following? Thank you for sticking with me on that one.  Raw salted brownie bites are just magic, hitting on all cylinders.

Raw Salted Brownie Bites
Healthy? Tasty? YUP. BOTH are true.

In the taste department, they are rich and chewy, moist and fudgie. Just the way I like them. As far as nutrition goes, they have a good amount of protein from the nuts and flax and hemp seeds. Plus, they get a healthy dose of omega 3s from the flax and walnuts, and plenty of fiber. Another bonus is these vegan brownie bites are plenty sweet, yet free of refined sugar. Cheers all around!

Raw Salted Brownie Bites
That little pinch of salt mixed into the hemp seeds makes all the difference

I’m going to keep it short this week so I can get back to my girls at the pool. We’ve been playing the greatest memory game of all time that solicits envious stares from everyone as we are hysterically laughing throughout. If you don’t have a posse like my JGIrls, I’d say to get on that STAT. The single best form of self-care. EVER.  In the meantime, I’d say to whip up a batch of Raw Salted Brownie Bites, they will love you in all the right ways.

Raw Salted Brownie Bites

Raw Salted Brownie Bites

Nutrient Dense healthy snack option.
Loaded with protein, fiber, healthy fats.
Naturally sweetened with a small amount of maple syrup.
Rich chocolaty taste enhanced by a pinch of sea salt.
Simple to make.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup raw walnuts
  • ½ cup raw pecans
  • 10 dates, pitted
  • 1/3 cup ground flax
  • 1/3 cup cacao powder
  • Pinch sea salt
  • 1 Tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • FOR THE OUTSIDE:
  • ¼ cup hemp seeds
  • ½ teaspoon flakey sea salt

Instructions

  1. Use a food processor to combine nuts and dates until crumbly. Add in flax, cacao and sea salt and process until the mixture becomes a ball. It may take 2-3 minutes, depending on how strong your processor is. Taste mixture and add maple syrup if it’s not sweet enough for you, processing until very well incorporated.
  2. Prepare a small plate with a mixture of hemp seeds and finishing salt.
  3. Turn the dough out onto the counter or a plate.
  4. Using your hands, roll mixture into small 1 ½” balls. You will get about 18, depending on size. If you want more uniform balls, use a small scoop to portion out and then roll into smooth balls.
  5. Roll the brownie bites into the hemp mixture until evenly coated. You can also prepare the hemp/salt and place in a small zip top bag and drop the balls into the bag and shake to thoroughly coat.
  6. Store in an airtight container room temp for a few days, in the fridge for a week, or in the freezer for 3 months.

Notes

I prefer to eat these cold, and you can eat these straight from the freezer....which may not help if you're trying to hide them from yourself!

These look the perfect treat to make with the grandkids on "sleepover" weekend. I like to have some healthy treats for them to eat. They love helping in the kitchen. These are perfect for little hands to make.

These are fantastic! I've been looking for new ways to make bite-sized snacks like this. And the fact that these are made up with healthy ingredients like dates, nuts, and flax makes them perfect. Dates are the perfect natural sweetener.

I agree wholeheartedly on chocolate needing a touch of complimentary salt. Tasty and healthy are my kind of treats! I think that it's fabulous that you've traveled with your tribe of ladies for so long. How fun!

I am so envious!! This is the first year in 20 that we have not gone to warmer climes in the dead of winter. I'm okay but poor Hubby is going nuts cooped up in the house. Your energy bites look amazing and it's a recipe I'm planning on making. Sometimes I just need a little something to get me through the morning and afternoon. The chocolate with the bit of salt sure makes them perfect bites.

DEbra, I would love to have a recipe like this but I have nut allergies. What could I substitute in their place (raisins, cranberries, figs, oats?). Also could I use raw sesame seeds instead of hemp seeds as a coating? Thanks.

For sure you can sub sesame seeds to coat these in, without an issue. If you can tolerate seeds, I would suggest subbing the nuts for a combination of pepitas and sunflower seeds...the oil content may be a bit different, and I haven't tried it, but my guess is that it will work well.
